Local Gov't ministry inaugurates MMDAs today

The Office of the President and the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development will jointly inaugurate the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) today, February 12, 2024, across the nation.
In an official statement by Matilda Tettey, PRO at the Ministry, it was highlighted that the inauguration aimed to facilitate the swearing-in of newly elected and appointed members of the MMDAs.
“This initiative is part of a broader strategy to deepen local governance and enhance the decentralisation system, fostering participatory decision-making at the grassroots level,” the statement added.
The Ministry stressed that the inauguration aligns with the Constitutional mandate outlined in Article 35, Clause 6 (d) of the 1992 Constitution.
This clause directs the state to actively promote decentralization and popular participation in governance, ensuring that citizens have ample opportunities to engage in decision-making processes at all government levels.
Recognising the significance of citizens' involvement in the functioning of MMDAs, the Local Government Ministry encouraged active participation in community decision-making through their Assembly representatives.
The Ministry emphasised the vital role citizens play in shaping local policies and initiatives, reinforcing the principles of democracy and inclusive governance.
“As the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies commence their new terms, the government anticipates strengthened community involvement and collaborative efforts towards building prosperous and well-governed localities,” the statement said.
