Former President John Dramani Mahama's lawyers have formally petitioned the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (DCOP) of the Ghana Police Service, urging an inquiry into the unauthorised use of their client’s credentials.

Dated October 2, 2023, the petition details the discovery of a document on various social media platforms titled “Memo: Support for the Occupy the BoG Demonstration,” bearing Mr Mahama's seal and style.

The lawyers assert that the document, signed by Joyce Below Mogtari, was not authored or issued by their client.

Mr Mahama's aide emphasised the importance of law enforcement in safeguarding democracy, citing the potential harm caused by disinformation.

She expressed hope that the police would take action to address the dissemination of false information associated with Mahama's office.

“We hope that the police will enforce the law and help protect our democracy", she said, adding: “Disinformation is inimical to our democracy. Our laws protect us and our democracy from disinformation.”
