President John Dramani Mahama has opened the newly constructed Damongo Camp Prison, describing the facility as a “powerful symbol of hope, redemption, and partnership” in Ghana’s ongoing national renewal and prison reform efforts.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Mahama highlighted the project as a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration between the state, the church, and the community in service to humanity.

The Damongo Camp Prison, built through a partnership between the Government of Ghana and The Church of Pentecost, is equipped with modern accommodation facilities, classrooms, workshops, a healthcare unit, and a digital learning centre.

The President said the facility reflects his administration’s broader commitment to prison reform and human-centred rehabilitation.

He commended The Church of Pentecost for its continued support to the Ghana Prisons Service, noting the Church’s successful completion of camp prisons at Ejura and Nsawam, as well as ongoing works at Obuasi.

President Mahama also announced that the Ghana Prisons Service will play a key role in the government’s 24-hour economy initiative, with plans to expand prison industries in areas such as furniture production, garment manufacturing, and agro-processing to boost economic productivity and provide skills training for inmates.

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Dr. Eric Kwabena Nyamekye, revealed that preliminary discussions have begun between Pentecost University and the Ghana Prisons Service to introduce certificate and diploma programmes tailored to the professional and educational development of prison officers, inmates, and ex-offenders.

He said the initiative aligns with the Church’s vision to promote rehabilitation through education, skills acquisition, and spiritual renewal, offering inmates a genuine opportunity to reintegrate successfully into society.

The opening of the Damongo Camp Prison marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s justice and correctional system — a step toward transforming prisons from mere detention facilities into centres of reformation, empowerment, and national productivity.
