South African delegation calls on PMMC management
As part of their visit to Ghana to understudy the country’s small-scale mining sector, the South African delegation has on Tuesday, 6th December 2022, embarked on a knowledge sharing experience with the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC).
The Managing Director of PMMC, Mr. Nana Akwasi Awuah took the delegation through the operations of the company. He said that as a state-owned company dealing in gold, their mandate, among other things includes trading in gold from the small-scale sector.
He continued that as the national assayers, it is their responsibility to inspect the quality and value of gold for export to provide revenue assurance to government.
"Part of our mandate includes value addition in terms of refinery, gold bars, jewellery manufacturing. You may well appreciate that, when it comes to value addition one of the key elements to is responsible sourcing", he added.
The Managing Director asserted that, illegal mining activities tints the gold thereby reducing its monetary value.
The leader of the delegation, Major General CN Zulu for her part, outlined some challenges confronting their mining sector, adding that in spite of the opposition from foreigners invading their mining operations, they have a good database system which helps them to track and crackdown offenders.
Relaying the impression of her team about the exercise, the Major General said her team has so far gained extra knowledge on mining activities from Ghana and will be pleased to learn more.
