17 doctors with mental health conditions; 12 battling substance abuse – Medical and Dental Council
The Ghana Medical and Dental Council (MDC) has revealed that 17 medical practitioners in the country have been reported with mental health conditions, while an additional 12 doctors are currently battling substance abuse challenges.
According to the Council, the cases have raised concerns about the mental well-being of healthcare professionals and the need for stronger support systems within Ghana's health sector.
The council stressed that mental health issues and substance abuse among medical practitioners can affect not only the individuals involved but also the quality of healthcare delivery if left unaddressed.
Registrar of the Council Dr Divine Banyubala disclosed that the affected practitioners are being monitored and supported through the appropriate regulatory and medical interventions aimed at ensuring patient safety while safeguarding the welfare of the doctors involved.
The revelation highlights the growing pressures faced by healthcare professionals, including long working hours, high-stress environments, emotional strain, and burnout, all of which can contribute to mental health challenges and substance dependency.
The Medical and Dental Council reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the health and well-being of practitioners while maintaining professional standards in the medical field.
It also encouraged medical professionals experiencing psychological distress or substance-related problems to seek help early and make use of available support services.
