Ghana, Africa CDC signs MoU to boost health security and epidemic surveillance
President John Dramani Mahama has announced the signing of a significant Memorandum of Understanding between Ghana and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), aimed at strengthening health security, data sharing, and cross-border epidemic surveillance across the sub-region.
The agreement was reached following a high-level meeting between President Mahama and Dr. John Nkengasong, Director-General of the Africa CDC, along with a delegation from the African Union.
Describing the meeting as productive, President Mahama highlighted the critical importance of regional cooperation in health surveillance and epidemic preparedness.
"This agreement will significantly enhance our epidemic intelligence capabilities and ensure we are better prepared for future health challenges," he stated.
The partnership is expected to facilitate improved data sharing protocols and enable coordinated responses to public health threats across borders—an initiative seen as vital in the wake of recent global and regional health crises.
President Mahama expressed Ghana’s appreciation for the Africa CDC’s continued support and reiterated the country's commitment to building a resilient healthcare system grounded in past lessons and future readiness.
Dr. Jean Kaseya of the Africa CDC also underscored the importance of African nations working towards self-sufficiency in healthcare delivery and epidemic management.
He commended Ghana's proactive stance and emphasised the collective goal of securing a healthier, more resilient Africa.
