The Africa Institute on Governance and Security (AIGS) has lauded President John Dramani Mahama for his appointment of Mr. Kojo Choi as Ghana’s Ambassador-Designate to the Republic of South Korea, describing the move as a “diplomatic masterstroke” and a model for progressive international relations.

In a statement issued and signed by Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, Governance Specialist and Security Strategist at AIGS, the institute praised the decision as a bold and visionary step that reflects Ghana’s commitment to inclusive, innovative diplomacy in the 21st century.

Mr. Choi, a Ghanaian of Korean descent and a celebrated fintech entrepreneur, is expected to serve as a cultural and economic bridge between Africa and Asia.

AIGS noted that his appointment demonstrates President Mahama’s recognition of the evolving nature of global diplomacy, where cross-cultural understanding, diversity, and technological expertise are essential in promoting national and continental interests.

“This strategic appointment underscores a nuanced understanding of soft power in geopolitics, leveraging shared heritage to strengthen bilateral ties and promote mutual prosperity,” the statement read.

According to AIGS, Mr. Choi’s deep connections to both Ghana and South Korea, as well as his expertise in digital finance, make him well-positioned to advance Ghana’s interests under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The institute believes his leadership could drive partnerships in emerging sectors such as smart agriculture, green energy, artificial intelligence, and financial technology—key areas for Africa’s sustainable development.

The institute also emphasised that the appointment aligns with its core values of good governance and strategic diplomacy and praised President Mahama for setting a precedent in inclusive leadership.

“We are confident that Mr. Choi’s tenure will deepen cooperation, enhance economic integration, and elevate Ghana’s standing as a leader in global diplomacy,” AIGS said.

“This move serves as a model for other African nations, highlighting the transformative potential of embracing the global dimensions of diplomacy in a rapidly changing world.”
