The arrest of Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has triggered sharp debate across Ghana’s political arena.

Abronye DC was taken into custody after alleging that President John Dramani Mahama was plotting a coup in collaboration with Al Qaeda militants.

According to the police, preliminary investigations revealed the allegations to be false and capable of disturbing public peace. He has since been charged with the publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to breaches of peace.

In reaction, Mr. Akwesi Acquah, Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, questioned both the timing and the manner of Abronye’s arrest, describing it as potentially politically motivated.

He urged President John Dramani Mahama to address what he sees as the misuse of state security forces against individuals who criticise public officials, stressing the need to uphold freedom of speech.

The case has reignited debate over Ghana’s commitment to democratic values and press freedom.

While Ghana has long been recognised as a beacon of democracy in Africa, critics warn that incidents like Abronye DC’s arrest test the balance between national security and individual rights.

The NPP has rallied in support of its regional chairman, with National Youth Organiser, Salam Mustapha condemning the police summons and voicing displeasure over what the party views as an attempt to intimidate its officials.

As the case unfolds, it continues to stir discussions on how Ghana should navigate the delicate line between protecting public order and safeguarding the constitutional right to free expression.
