Afenyo-Markin to Mahama: Apologise and engage more ministers, 60 won't help your cause

Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Alexander Afenyo-Markin has suggested to President John Mahama to repent of his aim to only appoint 60 ministers for his government, fulfilling his campaign promise.
Mr Afenyo-Markin worried the political class in the country was kowtowing to civil society organisations (CSOs) and their uninformed arguments against what they call an unnecessarily big government.
“The political class in this country must be bold and own the political narrative. I will not criticise because I am in opposition. When we make mistakes, let’s admit them and apologise. 60 ministers will not help your political cause,” he said on the floor of Parliament, Thursday, January 23, 2025.
“But when civil society comes out with a narrative, assuming everything is done by the political class, instead of us to rightly explain to them the intricacies of politics, we also fall for the trap, and make we political commitment.”
Illustrating his point, the lawyer and lawmaker added, “I don’t doubt the competence of Honourable Ahmed Ibrahim but that huge ministry – Local Government & Chieftancy – with all these conflicts, and behind-the-scenes negotiations for peace and local governance…
“Mr Speaker, I’m not the president but if I were to advise Mr President, I’d say, ‘Mr President, you can apologise to Ghanaians and say, ‘Look, I underestimated the thing. I think I need to engage more ministers’.”
“Mr Speaker, we cannot allow this,” Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasised.
