Bawumia declares intent to contest NPP flagbearership, says he can return like Mahama
Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially declared his intention to contest the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia made the announcement during a meeting with over 200 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The gathering was part of ongoing consultations as the former Vice President positions himself for a political comeback.
Addressing the former appointees, Dr. Bawumia drew parallels with President John Dramani Mahama’s successful return to the presidency in 2024, expressing confidence in his own path to victory.
“If Mahama can come back and win in 2024, I can also come back and win,” he told the enthusiastic gathering.
Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP into the 2024 elections as its presidential candidate, is now seeking to reclaim the party’s leadership ahead of the next electoral cycle.
His declaration signals the start of what is expected to be a competitive race within the NPP as it seeks to regroup and recapture power in 2028.
Party insiders say the meeting was well-received, with many of the former MMDCEs pledging their support for his renewed bid.
Meanwhile, the following contenders have also declared Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister, Dr Bryan Acheampong, former Agric Minister, Addai Nimoh, former MP for Mampong and Kennedy Agyepong, former MP for Assin Central
