Daaru withdraws from NDC primary to back Hajia Amina Adam ahead of Ayawaso East by-election
Abdul Salam Mohammed Daaru has withdrawn from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, pledging his full support for Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament, Nasser Mahama Toure, as the party prepares for the upcoming by-election.
Speaking to the media, Daaru explained that his decision was informed by consultations with party officials and supporters, as well as a careful assessment of the political dynamics surrounding the by-election.
He stressed that the move should not be seen as a retreat from politics, but rather a strategic step to strengthen unity within the party.
“We have been advised that in the current complexities and dynamics of this by-election, we need to take a strategic decision of waiting, not retreating,” Daaru said.
He noted that after evaluating the remaining aspirants, Hajia Amina Adam emerged as the candidate best positioned to champion the interests of the youth and continue the legacy of the late MP.
According to him, her longstanding engagement with young people in the constituency and her familiarity with grassroots concerns set her apart.
“The only candidate that we can trust, that we have worked with in the past, and that we know has the interests of the youth at heart is Hajia Amina Adam, the wife of the late Honourable Nasser Mahama Toure,” he stated.
Addressing concerns about her campaign readiness, Daaru assured that Hajia Amina Adam is fully prepared to participate in all party activities while respecting religious and traditional norms.
He clarified that campaign activities would be conducted strictly from the campaign office and not from her private residence.
“She is 100 per cent ready to fulfil all the obligations. All party activities will take place from the campaign office, and no political activity will be conducted from her house,” he added.
Daaru reiterated his commitment to the NDC, emphasising that his withdrawal was aimed at consolidating support behind a single candidate to improve the party’s chances in the by-election.
His decision reduces the number of aspirants contesting the NDC parliamentary primary in Ayawaso East from six to five. The party is scheduled to hold its primary on February 7, ahead of the by-election set for March 3, following the death of the sitting MP, Nasser Mahama Toure.
