Traditional medicine practice council (TMPC) shuts Nana Boakye herbal centre, sanctions others.
The Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) has ordered the closure of Nana Boakye Herbal Centre and taken action against several other traditional medicine facilities in the Tema Metropolis for flouting regulatory requirements.
The violations were identified during a monitoring and enforcement operation carried out by the Council’s Compliance, Inspection and Enforcement (CIE) Unit, as part of efforts to protect the public and enforce standards set out in the Traditional Medicine Practice Act, 2000 (Act 575).
According to the Council, checks conducted during the exercise showed that Oduma Herbal Boutique had engaged the services of a worker who was not registered, while Ancient Herbal was found to be operating with an out-of-date licence. Both outlets were permitted to resume operations after taking immediate steps to regularise their status by registering staff and renewing licences.
Other facilities inspected—Mallam Abdullah, That Day Herbal, and MH Organic Shop—were found to be fully in line with licensing and registration regulations.
Speaking to journalists after the exercise, Michael Lawson, Head of Compliance, Inspection and Enforcement at the TMPC, said Nana Boakye Herbal Centre was shut down because its licence had lapsed for nearly eight years and it employed two individuals who were not registered, contrary to the law.
He explained that the Council’s actions are aimed at maintaining professional standards rather than punishing practitioners.
“Our goal is to ensure quality, safety and public trust in traditional medicine practice,” Mr. Lawson said.
He advised all operators to regularly verify the validity of their licences and ensure that every practitioner or staff member is properly registered, adding that routine inspections will continue.
Mr. Lawson also encouraged members of the public to seek services only from approved facilities and to alert the Council to any suspected illegal operations. He noted that similar enforcement activities will be extended to other metropolitan, municipal and district areas in the coming weeks.
