In view of the "unfortunate passing of presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Madam Akua Donkor," the Jean Mensa-led Electoral Commission has asked the party to settle on a new flagbearer.

This was contained in a Tuesday, October 29, 2024, statement, signed by the election management body's Deputy Chairman (Operations), Samuel Tettey.

The statement said: "While the 1992 Constitution and the Public Elections Regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a presidential candidate, Article 50(4) of the 1992 Constitution provides as follows; “where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of the ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”

The EC said it had, therefore, "since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new candidate and inform the commission accordingly".

Ghana goes to the polls on Saturday, December 7.

A farmer and politician, the founder and presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, passed on Monday, October 28, 2024. She was pronounced dead at the Ridge Hospital, Accra, having been transferred there from the Nsawam Government Hospital.

According to her last child, the head of family will in due time explain the circumstances surrounding Madam Donkor’s shocking passing. She was 72.
