The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is aiming for a record-breaking voter turnout in the Volta Region, setting a target to secure between 300,000 and 500,000 votes in the 2024 presidential election.

This ambitious goal marks a threefold to fivefold increase in the party's performance in the 2020 elections, according to NPP Director of Communications Mr Richard Ahiagbah.

Speaking at a press conference on the "abuse of the electoral loyalty of the Volta Region" held at the NPP Regional Headquarters in Ho, Mr Ahiagbah outlined the party’s vision to expand its appeal and influence in a region traditionally dominated by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Our target is clear: we aim to win between 300,000 and 500,000 votes in the 2024 presidential election,” Mr Ahiagbah stated.

“This goal reflects our confidence in the message we bring, centered on economic empowerment, infrastructure, and sustainable development for all Ghanaians.”

Mr Ahiagbah underscored the NPP’s determination to transform the Volta Region into an electoral battleground where both parties vie based on policies that genuinely uplift the people.

“The NPP is committed to ending the NDC’s longstanding dominance, which we believe has not delivered the transformative progress the Volta Region deserves,” he said.

"Our approach will challenge the NDC’s historical tactics, which have relied on inflaming sectional differences and invoking the memory of former President Rawlings as a Volta native to secure votes."

While Ahiagbah acknowledged that the NDC might dismiss the notion of a competitive Volta Region, he pointed to shifting voter behaviour since the 2020 election, when the NPP won the Hohoe parliamentary seat for the first time, increased its presence in Ketu North, and garnered 14.1% of the presidential vote.

“These changes show that it’s no longer business as usual for the NDC in the Volta Region,” he added.

Mr Ahiagbah noted that the Volta Region is experiencing an “electoral renaissance,” with the middle class and youth driving demand for policies that foster economic growth and global competitiveness.

“Young people here, like those across Ghana, have embraced Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s policies, which aim to position Ghanaian youth at the forefront of global job and business opportunities,” he explained.

He further highlighted the warm reception Dr. Bawumia received during his recent tour of the region as evidence of growing support.

As a Voltarian, Ahiagbah expressed his belief in the region's potential for a competitive political landscape.

He described the NPP's plan for the Volta Region as an “electoral partnership” focused on development, inviting Voltarians to join in supporting the NPP to bring “Bold Solutions for Jobs and Business” to the region.

“The Volta Region stands to benefit from accelerated development under Dr. Bawumia’s presidency,” he concluded, pointing to the Akufo-Bawumia administration’s ongoing investments as a sign of more growth to come should the NPP secure victory in 2024.
