Dome-Kwabenya:EC affirms NDC's Akurugu as winner
The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
The declaration, made on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, follows weeks of disputes over the results of the December 7 election.
Akurugu secured victory with 50,967 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Mike Oquaye Jnr., who garnered 50,669 votes.
In her address during the announcement, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa stated that the outcome reflects the will of the people in Dome-Kwabenya.
"This result is a clear testament to the voice of the electorate, and the Electoral Commission is committed to upholding that voice," she affirmed.
Jean Mensa also highlighted the need for stakeholders to draw lessons from the election process.
She urged political parties to trust and respect the established systems to ensure electoral integrity.
The results bring an end to the contentious post-election period in Dome-Kwabenya.
The seat, historically a stronghold for the NPP, has shifted to the NDC, marking a significant political development in the constituency.
