Former MP dumps NPP for NDC in Lower West Akim
Former Member of Parliament for Lower West Akim, Gifty Klenam, has officially defected from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to join the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Eastern Region.
Viral images circulating on social media show Ms. Klenam holding an NDC party card, confirming her allegiance to the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Gifty Klenam was first elected as MP for Lower West Akim in 2004, serving two consecutive terms until 2012.
During her tenure, she held various positions and contributed to national development.
In 2017, she was appointed CEO of the Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) but was dismissed in 2020 following allegations of misconduct.
After leaving the GEPA, she aligned herself with Alan Kyerematen’s Movement for Change before ultimately joining the NDC.
Her decision in 2024 to run as an independent Parliamentary Candidate sparked outrage within NPP ranks, with Jeff Konadu Addo, an Eastern Regional NPP executive, describing her move as an act of selfishness and greed.
"Gifty Klenam has benefited greatly from the NPP as an MP and as a CEO at GEPA.
Now, she’s moving around asking people to support her independent bid, but no one is calling on her to contest," Konadu Addo stated in a radio interview.
He accused Klenam of undermining the party’s chances in the constituency, warning that such actions would not be tolerated.
Klenam’s decision to leave the NPP follows her defeat in the party’s parliamentary primaries to the current MP.
She has since claimed that the constituents of Asamankese are dissatisfied with the incumbent MP’s performance, prompting her decision to run as an independent candidate.
