Ghana’s challenges are a crisis of leadership-Alhaji Boniface

A Former Cabinet Minister and Member of Parliament for Madina Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, has declared that Ghana’s current difficulties stem from a crisis of leadership, not a failure of the nation itself.
Speaking at the official unveiling of the United Party (UP) — formerly the Movement for Change — in Accra on Thursday, the newly appointed Interim National Chairman emphasised the party’s commitment to redefining Ghana’s political direction through inclusive, competent, and visionary leadership, centred on its founder and flagbearer, Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.
“Ghana is not facing a problem. What we have is a leadership crisis,” Alhaji Boniface said.
“Leadership isn’t just about charisma; it’s about accountability. We must evaluate what leaders say in critical moments and ask whether they truly represent the people’s needs.”
He called for a deeper national reflection on leadership styles, distinguishing between transformational leadership, which inspires progress, and transactional leadership, which focuses on short-term gains.
Alhaji Boniface highlighted that the United Party’s mission is rooted in rekindling the spirit of national unity that once defined Ghana’s post-independence political history — particularly after the Avoidance of Discrimination Act of 1957, which led to the merger of several regional and ideological groups into one national front.
“Many have forgotten the contributions of those who helped shape our democracy,” he noted.
“We stand on the shoulders of leaders who overcame division to build a unified front.
That spirit must be reignited.”
He added that the new United Party coalition seeks to reflect Ghana’s diversity and resilience, drawing strength from the country’s cultural, regional, and ideological pluralism.
The UP Interim Chairman stressed that the new political movement is not a splinter group born out of discontent, but a deliberate coalition built on shared values, competence, and integrity.
According to him, the party brings together former Members of Parliament, Cabinet ministers, civil society actors, and individuals from various political traditions — including the NPP, NDC, and CPP — all united by a common desire for reform and progress.
“We are not here to destroy what others have built. We have reflected, discussed, and redefined our purpose,” he explained.
“This is about national progress, not personal ambition.”
He also unveiled a Strategic Alliance for Revolutionary Change, a cross-party movement aimed at promoting bold and honest leadership while challenging outdated political systems.
Outlining the United Party’s policy direction, Alhaji Boniface said the UP would embrace pragmatic governance — balancing free enterprise with strong social protection systems.
“Our strength lies in collaboration. While we may differ in opinion, we must never forget we share one nation and one destiny,” he said.
He emphasised that youth, women, and marginalised communities will be central to the party’s agenda, positioning the UP as a movement for generational renewal.
Alhaji Boniface concluded with a message to Ghanaians to rethink the political status quo and embrace a vision grounded in service, unity, and transparency.
“This is not a cry of bitterness but a call to conscience,” he declared.
“We are offering an alternative rooted in service, not control. We must remember where we started, so we can truly understand where we are going.”
The United Party (UP), which received its provisional certification in October 2025, positions itself as a third-force political alternative seeking to reshape Ghana’s governance through integrity, inclusivity, and pragmatic policy solutions.
