The wife of the late Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Hajia Amina Adam, has announced her decision to contest the upcoming parliamentary by-election following the death of her husband, Mahama Naser Toure.

The Electoral Commission (EC) on January 16, 2026, declared that the by-election for the Ayawaso East Constituency will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, after the parliamentary seat became vacant.

The move is in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates the EC to organise a by-election whenever a seat in Parliament becomes vacant.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 22, Hajia Amina Adam said her decision was prompted by appeals from constituents, grassroots party members and elders of the constituency, who urged her to continue the legacy of her late husband.

According to her, the calls reflected the confidence and trust the people of Ayawaso East have in her ability to serve.

She said she took time to reflect on the appeals before deciding to accept the challenge.

“There has been a clarion call from many quarters in my constituency and beyond to step into the shoes of my late husband, who served the Ayawaso East Constituency with distinction.

I have pondered over the calls from well-meaning members of the constituency, especially the elders and grassroots, and in so doing, I accept the call to serve my people,” she stated.

Hajia Amina Adam acknowledged that her decision comes at a difficult moment but said she was guided by consultations with community leaders, including chiefs, imams and youth leaders.

She assured residents of her commitment to serve diligently if given the mandate.

“I want to assure them that I will not disappoint them,” she added.

The announcement sets the stage for what is expected to be a keenly contested by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency.
