I know my level; it’s definitely not a clearing agent – Mahama claps back at Akufo-Addo's ‘one-term president’ remark

Former President John Dramani Mahama, has responded to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who recently labelled him a “one-term president.”

The former President, who serves as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, underscored his accomplishments in office and reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s progress, suggesting that his contributions extend beyond any single term of service.

Amid a backdrop of heightened political tension, Mr. Mahama’s response came shortly after he opted out of a proposed debate with the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at a governance forum in Accra, Mr. Mahama addressed the “one-term” label directly, stating: “I know my level. If someone says I have no level because I served only one term, I know my level is definitely not to be a clearing agent,” alluding to perceived differences in governance between himself and the incumbent.

Beyond political retorts, Mr. Mahama emphasised his longstanding dedication to transparency and accountability, pledging to prioritise these values if re-elected.

“This is not a quest for witch hunting, but it is a genuine desire by Ghanaians to see public officers held to account for the public trust that was placed in them,” he asserted.

He continued that: “Fighting corruption requires courage and principle. I will ensure meritorious appointments and allow the systems of transparency and accountability to operate with full authority.”

The NDC leader expressed his belief in proactive governance and principled leadership, advocating for a government that instills public trust through concrete actions and transparent structures.
