Mahama Ayariga condemns military brutality; demands full probe

The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned what he describes as the unacceptable conduct of military personnel in Bawku, including the destruction of a culturally significant statue and acts of brutality against civilians.
In a press statement issued on Monday, July 14, Mr Ayariga demanded immediate investigations by the military high command into the incidents that occurred on Sunday, July 13.
“I condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unacceptable act of destruction of the statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, by some military personnel,” Mr Ayariga stated.
He also decried reports of military brutality on civilians, describing the conduct as “unacceptable” and calling on the senior hierarchy of the military to take swift action.
While condemning the actions of the military, Mr Ayariga also criticised the violent attack by unknown assailants on a vehicle being escorted by soldiers.
“The violent gun attack by an unknown youth on the vehicle escorted by soldiers is equally condemned, and further attacks must cease,” he noted.
He acknowledged the complexity of the situation but stressed the need to end all forms of violence.
Appealing to the youth of Kusaug, Mr Ayariga urged restraint and calm as the government intervenes.
“I appeal to the Kusasis youth to calm down as the Government takes urgent steps to investigate the infiltrations into the ranks of the military by elements who seek to politicise and further destabilise the situation in Bawku,” he said.
He concluded by extending condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and those who suffered as a result of the clashes.
