Minority Leader Osahene Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has raised alarm over the prolonged delay in declaring the parliamentary election results for the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra Region, nearly six months after the December 2024 general elections.

Addressing the issue, Afenyo-Markin expressed grave concern that residents of the constituency remain without representation in Parliament due to unresolved challenges surrounding the collation of results.

The Minority Leader and MP for Effetu Constituency made this demand during a statement on the floor of Parliament.  

He attributed the delay to serious lapses on the part of the Electoral Commission and the Ghana Police Service.

The Minority Leader condemned the failure of the police to secure the collation process, citing reported incidents of supporters storming the collation centre, vandalising property, and threatening electoral officials.

He noted that despite court directives, the police failed to provide adequate protection to ensure the completion of the process, resulting in a constitutional deadlock that has stalled the official declaration of results.

Afenyo-Markin urged the government, particularly the Ministry of the Interior, to intervene immediately and compel the police to uphold their constitutional mandate of safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

He warned that the ongoing delay not only undermines Ghana’s democratic credibility but also effectively disenfranchises thousands of voters in Ablekuma North.

He emphasised that electoral disputes must be resolved swiftly to preserve public confidence in the democratic system.

Reiterating his call for urgent action, Afenyo-Markin insisted that the people of Ablekuma North deserve to be represented in Parliament and must not be denied their constitutional right any further.
