NLC, GAP withdraw from Dec. 7 polls certification issues and voter Concerns
The National Liberation Congress (NLC) and the Ghana Alternative Party (GAP) have officially withdrawn from the upcoming December 7th elections.
The announcement followed an emergency meeting on Wednesday, 11 September 2024, led by Osahene Nana Agyei Boateng, the leader and founder of GAP.
The alliance, which had initially planned to field Stephen Atubiga as an independent candidate, faced significant challenges that led to their withdrawal.
Key issues included the NLC’s pending final certification from the Electoral Commission (EC) and time constraints in registering a new alliance logo.
Their decision was influenced by several factors. Voter feedback revealed concerns that supporting an independent candidate might be seen as a wasted vote amid the intense competition between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Furthermore, the current economic situation has amplified perceptions that only the major parties are equipped to govern effectively. The alliance also considered that a unified third force of independent candidates and smaller parties might have gained more traction.
However, the fragmentation among these groups and voter skepticism ultimately led to their decision.
Despite their withdrawal, the NLC and GAP remain committed to their vision and manifesto. They intend to support any party that aligns with their goals.
