Tensions within the traditional leadership of the Greater Accra Region have resurfaced following accusations by the Chief of Ngleshie Lafa, Nii Ayi Okufoubour I, that the Nungua Paramount Chief, Nii Odaifio Welentsi, has contributed to prolonged chieftaincy disputes in the region, particularly in James Town.

Nii Ayi Okufoubour alleged that ongoing chieftaincy conflicts affecting several Ga communities are not isolated but are linked to petitions and actions originating from the Nungua Stool.

He claimed that alleged interference in succession matters and the installation of unqualified individuals as chiefs have deepened divisions among clans and undermined unity within the Ga State.

Speaking to the media, the Ngleshie Lafa chief argued that such interventions have weakened traditional authority structures and disrupted long-standing customs governing chieftaincy succession.

He further contended that many of the disputes could be avoided if the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs strictly adhered to established traditional jurisdictions.

Nii Ayi Okufoubour warned that unresolved chieftaincy tensions pose a threat to peace and development, noting that persistent disputes could inflame youth unrest and erode the cultural heritage of the Ga people.

He stressed that resolving such matters requires truth, transparency, and strict adherence to customary practices.

Addressing the long-standing James Town Paramountcy dispute, he accused both the Nungua Paramount Chief and the Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs of contributing to delays in resolving the issue.

In response, Nii Odaifio Welentsi has rejected suggestions that he is responsible for destabilising chieftaincy affairs in the region, insisting that his actions have always been guided by tradition, law, and the desire to preserve peace among Ga communities.

He explained that his actions are rooted in the tradition of Greater Accra, adding that his call has always been for dialogue, restraint, and respect for customary processes to bring lasting resolution to the disputes.
