Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has received a comprehensive briefing from the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council on key developments and ongoing interventions in the Ashanti Region.

The delegation was led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, who outlined measures being implemented to address security, sanitation, infrastructure and social welfare concerns across the region.

On security, the Council detailed steps taken in response to recent incidents, including the murder of a Kusasi Chief.

Among the measures introduced are the registration of motorbikes to strengthen security oversight and the provision of protection for other chiefs in vulnerable communities.

The Council also addressed tensions arising from confrontations between youth and law enforcement officers at illegal mining sites, noting efforts to restore calm and maintain stability.

The Vice President commended the Council for its swift response and efforts to preserve peace, while acknowledging the invaluable guidance and support of Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II in promoting harmony within the region.

Sanitation and infrastructure were highlighted as central pillars of the region’s development agenda.

The Council reported positive outcomes from the National Sanitation Day exercises, including the desilting of major drains at Asokwa and Ahodwo to improve drainage and support planned road dualisation projects.

Under the government’s “Big Push” initiative, several major road projects are progressing, including the Kumasi–Sunyani Road, the dualisation of the Ahodwo and Santasi Roundabout, the Sekyere–Kwamang and Sekyere–Nsuta roads, and the Outer Kumasi Ring Road.

Additionally, the redesign of the Suame Interchange from a four-tier to a three-tier structure is expected to reduce costs and minimise demolitions.

The projects are aimed at enhancing mobility, easing congestion and facilitating trade within the region.

On market and social welfare issues, the Council briefed the Vice President on ongoing rehabilitation programmes for drug users to support their reintegration into society, including involving them in sanitation activities.

In response to recent market fires and emergencies, regional disaster management teams have been activated and are collaborating with market boards and management committees to strengthen preparedness and response systems.

Construction of 24-hour markets is also advancing, backed by allocations from the District Assembly Common Fund.

The Vice President commended the Council for its dedication and urged sustained focus on security, sanitation and public education through schools, markets and community platforms.

She further encouraged deeper public engagement and continued collaboration to ensure lasting stability and development in the Ashanti Region.
