Anthony Joshua released from hospital, mourns friends killed in Nigeria car crash
British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been discharged from hospital in Nigeria, according to a joint statement issued by the Ogun and Lagos state governments.
The development comes days after a fatal car accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends, leaving Joshua “heavy hearted,” according to authorities.
Medical officials say the 36-year-old former world champion is fit to continue his recovery at home.
The accident occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, when Joshua was seated directly behind the driver in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway in Ogun State, near Lagos. While the driver and Joshua survived, the boxer’s close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, died in the crash.
On Wednesday, December 31, following his discharge from hospital, the boxer visited a funeral home where the mortal remains of his friends were “being prepared for repatriation,” the joint statement said.
Ogun State police spokesperson Oluseyi Babaseyi told the BBC that “investigations are still ongoing,” describing the process as “still discreet”.
According to the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) in Ogun State, preliminary investigations indicate that the vehicle was travelling above the speed limit and suffered a tyre burst before crashing into the stationary truck.
Joshua, who was born in Watford to Nigerian parents, was in Nigeria on holiday following his victory over American YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami, USA, on December 19.
Ghami, one of the victims, was Joshua’s full-time sport and exercise rehabilitation coach and had worked closely with him for more than a decade.
