Former Ghana football legends call on Speaker Bagbin, express gratitude for support of Democracy Cup
A delegation of former Ghana football stars on Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to thank him for his continued support for the Democracy Cup, an initiative celebrating Ghana’s democratic journey through sports.
The delegation was led by former Hearts of Oak captain Amankwa Mireku, who conveyed the group’s appreciation for the Speaker’s commitment to honouring Ghana’s rich football heritage and his role in promoting initiatives that bridge sports and national unity.
Speaker Bagbin, in response, underscored the expanding economic importance of football, stressing that the sport has evolved beyond entertainment into a significant business sector with vast opportunities.
He called for deliberate efforts to create more avenues for retired footballers to contribute to national development.
He also encouraged the legends to remain actively involved in promoting the Democracy Cup, noting that their experience and influence are vital to sustaining the event’s impact and inspiring future generations.
The courtesy call forms part of ongoing engagements to strengthen the relationship between Parliament and the sporting community.
