GFA Executive Council member backs Otto Addo amid AFCON failure

Nana Sarfo Oduro, a member of the Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has expressed unwavering support for Black Stars coach Otto Addo despite mounting criticism following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Addo, 47, who was reappointed in March 2024, has faced significant backlash after Ghana finished last in Group F with just three points, prompting widespread calls for his removal.
Sarfo Oduro defended Addo’s capabilities, highlighting his achievements and potential to lead the team to success in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
“Otto Addo is doing two things. He is at the point of qualifying for the World Cup, though he could not qualify for the AFCON.
So what shows he has not performed well?” Oduro questioned.
Sarfo Oduro lauded Addo’s tactical expertise and resilience, drawing parallels with world-renowned football managers.
“He [Otto Addo] is a top coach. He qualified us for the World Cup. Another ‘Mourinho’ could have lost,” he added, referring to Addo’s role in securing Ghana’s spot in the last World Cup.
The GFA has yet to make an official announcement on Addo’s future as Black Stars head coach.
In the meantime, the team is focused on redemption as they prepare for Matchday 5 and 6 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Ghana is set to face Chad and Madagascar in crucial matches this March, where their performance could determine the team’s path forward under Addo’s leadership.
He spoke in an interview on Asempa FM’s Sports Nite Show.
