Ringside physician Dr Edward Asante has reacted to the tragic and mysterious death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju in a fight in Ghana.

In the third round of a light heavyweight fight against Ghana’s Jon Mbanugu at the Bukom Boxing Arena, Accra, on Saturday, March 30, 2025, Olanrewaju suddenly lost balance, seemed disoriented, and collapsed onto the ropes.

Dr Asante rushed into the ring to intervene. He removed the 40-year-old boxer’s gum shield and administering emergency care but he and the medical team were unable to revive Olanrewaju.

"It was shocking how he collapsed, as there was no punch involved,” Dr Asante recalled to Daily Graphic.

He lamented, “We did our best, but tragically, we lost him."

Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju was marked dead 30 minutes after being transported via an ambulance to the nearby Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

“It could have been a cardiac arrest or an underlying medical condition that only his family or close associates would know about,” Dr Edward Asante commented.
