The Ashanti Region has emerged as Ghana’s leading hub for livestock processing, recording the slaughter of more than 450 cattle daily alongside thousands of sheep and goats to meet growing commercial demand.

The figures, announced by the National Vice President of the Butchers Association and Ashanti Regional Chief Butcher, Alhaji Ibrahim Wahab Tikuma, significantly exceed the combined daily cattle processing output of Accra and Tema.

Speaking on Adehye FM’s Ghana Ekosen morning show, Alhaji Tikuma disclosed that Kumasi remains the centre of the region’s livestock trade and processing activities, accounting for nearly 300 cattle slaughtered each day.

According to him, operations are largely concentrated at major facilities such as the Kumasi Abattoir and the Suame Abattoir, although slaughtering activities continue at some unapproved locations across the region.

He noted that the Greater Accra Region and Tema together process fewer than 150 cattle daily, underscoring Ashanti Region’s dominant role in Ghana’s livestock industry.

Alhaji Tikuma attributed the region’s high processing volumes to Kumasi’s strategic position as a key livestock transit and trading hub, linking supply chains from northern Ghana to markets across the country.

He further urged butchersy. and meat dealers to patronise approved slaughter facilities to ensure proper veterinary inspection, improved sanitation, and effective waste management.
