Mahama criticises South Africa’s response to xenophobic attacks
John Dramani Mahama has criticised South Africa’s response to recent xenophobic attacks, saying authorities appeared to do little to protect foreign nationals affected by the violence.
Speaking at Chatham House in London, Mahama said nearly 200 Ghanaians sought refuge at Ghana’s embassy after coming under attack in Durban and other areas.
He stated that the South African authorities did not appear to take sufficient action to stop the attacks or provide protection for those displaced.
He also alleged that some foreigners were targeted in health facilities and asked to leave despite being ill.
According to the President, Ghana was compelled to organise the evacuation of its citizens after many sought shelter at the embassy.
He said one evacuation flight had already been completed, with two more planned for those who wished to return home voluntarily.
Mahama described the situation as unfortunate and urged South Africa to address the underlying causes of the violence while ensuring the protection of foreign nationals living in the country.
