The Ghana Roads Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), and other transport sector stakeholders are expected to meet the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, over the proposed 20 percent increase in transport fares.

The meeting is scheduled to take place at 11:00 a.m. at the conference room of the Ministry of Transport.

According to sources within the transport sector, the discussions are expected to focus on the proposed fare adjustment as well as broader operational challenges confronting commercial transport operators across the country.

The meeting follows growing public debate over the announced fare increment, which transport operators say has been necessitated by rising fuel prices, increasing spare parts costs, and other operational expenses.

The GPRTU and other transport operators had earlier indicated plans to implement a 20 percent increase in transport fares nationwide.

However, the GRTCC subsequently stated that no final agreement had been reached on the adjustment, explaining that the usual consultative process involving transport unions and the Ministry of Transport had not yet been concluded.

The outcome of today’s meeting is expected to determine whether the proposed fare increment will be approved, reviewed, or postponed.

Transport operators are also expected to use the meeting to raise concerns about fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs, taxation on spare parts, and other issues affecting the sustainability of public transport operations in Ghana.
