Prominent lawyer Ace Anan Ankomah has publicly admonished the societal tendency to demean musicians and individuals in the creative arts, asserting that musical talent should not be equated with academic failure or a questionable upbringing.

In a recent public statement on Facebook, Ankomah addressed what he described as the "subtle and sometimes obvious disrespect" reserved for musicians in society, noting that some people still treat the profession as though it is evidence of "academic collapse" or a poor life decision.

Reflecting on his own path, Ankomah shared that during his first year at the University of Ghana, Legon, he chose to study law over a professional music career. He now classifies himself as a "music hobbyist" rather than a full-time musician, using music for joy, self-expression, and personal therapy alongside his legal practice.

However, he emphasised that the distinction between pursuing music professionally versus for leisure does not diminish the value of the inherent talent.

To illustrate his point, Ankomah recounted an encounter at a court outside Accra where an opposing senior lawyer attempted to use his musical background as an insult during a cross-examination, asking, "Ah, is this not the guy who appears on TV playing music?"

Ankomah countered the remark by pointing out that the musical ability was an additional talent, while subsequently revealing that he was actually the landlord of the Accra apartment the senior lawyer regularly rented. According to Ankomah, the musical references ceased immediately after the exchange.

"Moral of the story: some people pursue music professionally; some of us pursue it for fun. But talent is talent," Ankomah stated.

He cautioned the public against looking down on musicians, noting pragmatically that in the current economy, critics might unwittingly find themselves financially beholden to the very creatives they disparage.

Ankomah concluded his statement with a disclaimer, clarifying that his post was a general reflection and not connected to any ongoing disputes, trending events, or specific personalities.
