Fibroid Awareness Month (July): Lydia Forson inspires, empathises with suffering women; 'I lived in pain for 10 years'

Actress and activist Lydia Forson

Lydia Forson has revealed she endured pain due to fibroids for 10 years "before I got help".

The actress and activist spoke via a series of posts on X, Thursday, June 18, 2024.

Her initial words showed she meant to encourage women currently fighting what she has overcome.

"To the women who’ve had to live in constant pain, multiple surgeries, questions about children, if you’re pregnant because of how you look, or the fear that you never will; you’re not alone," Ms Forson said.

She applauded "brave" women who, against all odds, come out to speak on such a sensitive topic, giving salient education to individuals who, otherwise, "were completely ignorant until our diagnosis".

"So many women have stories they can’t share, because of how painful it is; but I’m happy for the brave ones who do. You give courage to many women and educate even more. For some of us, we were completely ignorant until our diagnosis," the social commentator said.

Lydia Forson, here, revealed the disturbing way in which she first learned she had fibroids.

"For years I was in severe pain, sometimes so paralyzing I couldn’t move. It wasn’t until I ended up in emergency and blanked out, that I knew something was wrong. And when doctors ran the test, they discovered I had fibroids," she said.

Choosing to control her emotions and tongue, she noted the "worst part" after her diagnosis was an unnamed doctor scaring her so much, even suggesting she got pregnant as soon as was possible.

"The worst part of this journey was not the surgery, thankfully I had great doctors who took fantastic care of me. It was in the fear of the unknown; the first doctor almost gave me no hope at all. Suggesting even that I go out and find anyone to have a baby with. ( long story)," the award-winning movie personality said.

Relief came, eventually, she added, when "when I met the right doctors, they gave me such a sense of relief, told me hard truths without scaring me, and gave me the courage I needed to have my surgery".

"Today I’m grateful that I don’t have to live in so much pain, grateful that no one else will find me on a bathroom floor too paralyzed to move. Grateful that I don’t have to be rushed into emergency and even more grateful that I’m alive to share my story, when some aren’t," Ms Forson triumphantly noted.

The film producer's last but one post was to encourage her biological mates to "run tests, ask questions" and "not feel so alone".

"My story is a lot more complicated than I’ve shared, and this is just a summary. But to any woman reading this, I do hope you’re inspired to run tests, ask questions about your body, and also not feel so alone with the things you have to live with," she said.

She lastly acknowledged a doctor who is passed and another alive "for the introduction and support".

"I have to thank Dr. Bilson of blessed memory and @DrKevWoodz for the introduction and support [thank you emoji]," Lydia Forson, 39, said.

Non-cancerous, fibroids are growth that target the uterus or womb. Given its sneaky nature, often presenting with no visible or alarming symptoms, fibroid go undetected among women. That notwithstanding, heavy menstrual bleeding, frequent urination and an appearance of pregnancy due to an enlarged abdomen are some signs of fibroids. A doctor's examination and diagnosis is paramount.
