E/R: Galamsey pit kills JHS 1 pupil in Akwatia

A 12 year old orphan and pupil of Boadua Presby Junior High School (JHS) 1 has died, after falling into a galamsey (illegal mining) pit near his house in Boadua, a suburb of Akwatia, Eastern Region.
His body has been deposited at St Dominic Catholic Church morgue, Akwatia.
The sad event took place in the early hours of Ghana's 68th Independence Day Celebrations on March 6, 2025.
Regardless of the numerous call by civil society organisations (CSOs), and the presidency to halt the activities of illegal mining in the country, some individuals still mine indiscriminately and illegitimately in Akwatia, Kade, Oda, Asamankese, Kyebi, Ayensuanor and other communities. With impunity, and armed, these galamsey operators seek to challenge authorities on the harmful activity which poses severe environmental challenges.
