Gov't delivers on long-awaited support for Ghana’s Film Industry – Kafui Danku
Ghanaian actress and Executive Secretary of the National Film Authority (NFA), Kafui Danku, has praised the government for fulfilling its pledge to support the country’s film and audio-visual sector through the introduction of a GHS20 million Film Development Fund.
Speaking during the official launch of the initiative on May 20, 2026, Kafui Danku described the fund as a major turning point for Ghana’s creative arts industry, stressing that it marks the first time the NFA has received such financial backing since its establishment.According to her, the newly introduced seed fund is expected to provide financial assistance to players across the film and audio-visual value chain, helping to address one of the industry’s biggest challenges — access to funding.
She noted that for years, filmmakers and other creatives have struggled to secure the financial support needed to expand their work and improve the quality of productions.
The government’s intervention, she said, represents a significant breakthrough for the sector.
Kafui Danku explained that the fund is intended to help grow the industry sustainably while encouraging beneficiaries to use the support responsibly to strengthen the creative ecosystem for future generations.
She further clarified that the money is not a grant, revealing that discussions are ongoing on how the funds will be recovered from beneficiaries after disbursement.
Details of the repayment structure, she added, will be communicated to the public in due course.
The NFA Executive Secretary also disclosed that the initiative is open to a wide range of stakeholders within the audio-visual industry, including filmmakers, producers, distributors, exhibitors, broadcasters, and content creators.
