Alexander Afenyo-Markin, lawyer, Member of Parliament (MP) for Effutu and Minority Leader, has forcefully condemned the recently passed Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, which is also known as the anti-LGBT Bill.

Taking to his official Facebook page as the controversial legislation awaits presidential assent, the high-ranking lawmaker broke ranks with the overwhelming legislative consensus to issue a stark warning about the bill’s human toll and its implications for the rule of law.

"A law that imprisons people for their sexual orientation or who they choose to love, does not protect society," Afenyo-Markin stated bluntly.

"It simply selects a group of human beings and makes their existence a crime. That is a line no Parliament in the civilised world should cross."

The Effutu MP’s remarks come on the heels of Parliament officially passing the sweeping anti-LGBTQ+ omnibus bill in May 2026, pushing the nation into uncharted constitutional and diplomatic waters.
