Member of Parliament for Berekum West, Dickson Kyere-Duah, has called for the enactment of a comprehensive policy to address the indiscriminate parking of haulage containers and heavy-duty trucks along the shoulders of major highways, particularly the Accra–Kumasi Highway.

According to the legislator, the practice poses a significant danger to motorists and has contributed to the increasing number of road crashes across the country. He noted that several lives have been lost in accidents involving vehicles parked along highways, stressing that the issue requires urgent legislative intervention.

Kyere-Duah proposed that the government introduce a law empowering the appropriate state authorities to tow away haulage trucks and other vehicles found parked illegally on highway shoulders. He further suggested that owners of such vehicles should bear the full cost of towing and any associated penalties as a deterrent against the practice.

The Berekum West MP made the remarks in support of a statement presented on the floor of Parliament by the Member of Parliament for Bibiani–Anhwiaso–Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo, who called for decisive measures to address the growing menace of indiscriminate parking on the nation’s highways.

The lawmakers believe that stricter enforcement and appropriate legislation will help improve road safety, reduce preventable accidents, and protect the lives of motorists and other road users.
