Environmental watchdog group, The Eagle Eyesight Spirit, has sounded the alarm over large-scale illegal sand winning at Fetteh Beach, near the Pentecost Convention Centre in the Central Region, warning of dire consequences if the practice is not stopped immediately.

At a press briefing, the group’s director, Mr. Patrick Winibood Ndego, allegedly named two individuals — Kwesi Alhaji and Anthony Annan (also known as Nii Bokorbokor and Charles Graham) — as the alleged masterminds behind the activity.

According to Mr. Ndego, an estimated 1.44 million tons of sand have already been taken from the site, particularly from areas close to the Marine Hotel.

He cautioned that the ongoing destruction poses a direct threat to the sea defense system, which was constructed to shield nearby communities from tidal waves.

“The sea defense has been severely damaged, with only about four feet of the structure left intact.

If nothing is done, the defense will collapse, and towns including Fetteh, Kakraba, Tuba, and Kasoa will be at risk of catastrophic flooding,” he warned.

The group further alleged that the individuals behind the illegal operations are being shielded by influential figures, including some within government circles.

The Eagle Eyesight Spirit is therefore calling on the President, National Security, the Inspector- General of Police, and other relevant authorities to urgently intervene, halt the sand winning, and restore the sea defense system.

Mr. Ndego disclosed that his team has gathered evidence — including videos and equipment used for the sand winning — and vowed to continue investigations while encouraging the public to share information that could aid in stopping the destruction.

“This is not just an environmental issue; it is a looming disaster that could affect thousands of lives if immediate steps are not taken,” he stressed.

Efforts to contact one of the accused have so far proven futile.
