Transport Minister Joseph Nikpe Bukari has assured the public that the recently introduced peak-hour support buses will charge only the officially approved transport fares.

In an interview on Thursday December 11, 2025, he emphasised that commuters will not pay any extra fees, even though the initiative involves both state-run and private transport operators to ease the severe evening congestion in Accra.

According to the Minister, the intervention is meant to stabilise the system—not to introduce a premium service. He noted that the primary issue is the limited number of vehicles available at peak times, which has created a gap the new buses are intended to fill.

Mr. Bukari explained that additional private companies will be brought on board if demand increases. He reaffirmed that all buses under the programme will run on existing routes and comply strictly with the fare regime set by the Ministry and transport unions.

The government rolled out the emergency bus reinforcement programme on Wednesday, December 10, targeting four major transport corridors in the capital. The move follows persistent complaints from workers who face long queues, arbitrary fare increases, and difficulty getting home during rush hour.
