Government to convert Kotoka Airport Terminal 2 into multipurpose facility to ease congestion
The government has announced plans to convert Terminal 2 of the Kotoka International Airport into a multipurpose terminal as part of efforts to ease congestion and improve passenger experience, particularly during peak travel hours.
The Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, disclosed this while appearing before the Public Accounts Committee on Tuesday, January 13. He explained that Terminal 3, which handles most international flights, experiences severe congestion in the evenings, while Terminal 2 remains relatively underutilised during the same period.
“We experience a lot of congestion in the evenings at Terminal 3. We have Terminal 2 that is not that busy when it gets to peak hours,” the minister noted.
To address the imbalance, Joseph Nikpe said government plans to construct a connecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3. This, he explained, will allow international passengers to be shared between the two terminals, easing pressure on Terminal 3.
“The mind is to do a connecting concourse between Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 just to facilitate the movement of our international passengers so that we can share the Terminal 2 with Terminal 3 for our international passengers,” he said.
According to the minister, the project has been classified as a high-priority government initiative and is scheduled for implementation in 2026. Once completed, Terminal 2 will operate as a multipurpose terminal, serving both domestic and international flights.
“It is a high government priority project which will bring some kind of comfort to our international passengers. Terminal 2 will now be a multipurpose terminal for domestic and international,” Mr Nikpe added.
