The High Court will deliver judgment on July 3 in the illegal mining case involving Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and two other accused persons.

This follows the closure of the defence case on Wednesday, June 3, after its fifth and final witness, Evans Addae, completed testimony and was cross-examined by Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem Sai.

The case concerns allegations of illegal mining activities at a concession in Samreboi in the Western Region.

Before adjourning, the court ordered both the prosecution and defence to submit any written addresses they intend to rely on by June 17, 2026.

The July 3 ruling will mark the end of months of proceedings that have drawn considerable public and political interest.

The trial has heard evidence from both prosecution and defence witnesses, including former Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, who testified for the defence.

Speaking to Joy News after the proceedings, Wontumi’s lawyer Tetteh Thompson said: “On our part, we have done what is necessary, and we are very convinced that the system will work and the court will do the needful.”

With the defence and prosecution cases now closed, the court is set to determine whether the charges against the accused have been proven.
