NPP government left contractors unpaid for 8 years in Upper Denkyira East – MCE
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Upper Denkyira East Municipality has revealed that contractors who worked under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government in the area went unpaid during the NPP's eight years in office.
Speaking at a press conference during the "Accounting to the People" event, Mr George Anane Coleman stated that his administration, upon assuming office with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, immediately paid most of the stranded contractors who had worked for the Municipal Assembly.
The MCE explained that the assembly used portions of common fund allocations to settle these long-outstanding debts, as many projects had been abandoned by the previous NPP administration due to non-payment. He pledged to complete most of these legacy projects as long as he remains MCE.
Out of 9 unpaid contractors, eight have now received their payments since he took office, he highlighted.
The MCE emphasised that all deplorable roads in Upper Denkyira East will be constructed under the supervision of President John Dramani Mahama.
He noted that the NPP failed to build even a single road in the municipality over eight years, but the NDC government will address this to ease traffic in town.
In addition, the MCE highlighted improvements in the municipality's internal revenue mobilisation, which will support ongoing developmental projects.
The assembly's Internally Generated Funds (IGF) will fund school construction and other initiatives, he said, adding that the second batch of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) has now been disbursed to the assembly's account. It will be used for constructing schools, CHPS compounds, mechanised boreholes, reshaping school buildings, and other projects, he noted.
He urged residents to place their trust and confidence in President Mahama's NDC government, which he described as the only one truly committed to Ghanaians' welfare.
More developmental projects are planned for the coming years, he assured.
In the education sector, the MCE said the municipality was progressing well, though most schools faced a shortage of teachers, impacting teaching and learning.
The MCE appealed to teachers not to leave, assuring them of upcoming policies and measures to ease their service delivery.
He also called on the government to provide more teachers.
