The Patriotic Journalists Against Galamsey (PAJAG) has commended the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its sector minister, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, for the successful repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462, describing the move as a major victory in Ghana’s fight against illegal mining.

In a statement issued on December 19, 2025, PAJAG praised the Ministry for demonstrating strong leadership and commitment to environmental protection by revoking the controversial legislative instrument, which was introduced in 2023.

L.I. 2462 had permitted mining activities in forest reserves under presidential approval, a provision that sparked widespread public criticism.

Environmental groups and civil society organizations warned that the law posed a serious threat to Ghana’s protected forests, rivers, and biodiversity, and could further fuel illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

According to PAJAG, the repeal of the legislative instrument has effectively closed a dangerous legal loophole that undermined environmental safeguards and encouraged destructive mining practices in protected areas.

“This landmark decision reflects exemplary leadership and a deep commitment to safeguarding our forests, rivers, and biodiversity for future generations,” the statement noted.

The group emphasised that by prioritising national interest over vested pressures, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has set a powerful precedent in the ongoing fight against illegal mining and environmental degradation.

PAJAG further applauded the Minister and his team for choosing sustainability and environmental protection over short-term economic gains, stressing that the decision will help preserve Ghana’s natural heritage for generations to come.

The organisation also extended its goodwill to the Ministry, wishing  Armah Kofi Buah and the entire Lands Ministry continued strength, wisdom, and success in the year ahead, 2026, as efforts intensify to reclaim and protect Ghana’s forests and water bodies.

The statement was signed by Nana Otu Darko, Executive Director of Patriotic Journalists Against Galamsey (PAJAG).

PAJAG reaffirmed its commitment to supporting policies and actions that promote responsible environmental stewardship and sustainable development across the country.
