Tamale: 15 children die at TTH due to lack of pediatric dialysis machines
Fifteen children have lost their lives at the Tamale Teaching Hospital due to a shortage of pediatric dialysis machines and consumables.
Healthcare workers have resorted to using adult machines, posing severe risks to vulnerable patients.
Adam Yahaya Wanzam, Nurse Manager at the Tamale Teaching Hospital Dialysis Unit, has issued an SOS for assistance, urging the government, individuals, and NGOs to provide the urgently needed life-saving equipment and supplies.
Mr Wanzam laments the loss of children and highlights the devastating consequences of the shortage, emphasising the need for support to prevent further tragedies.
"We have lost over 10 to 15 children who were supposed to receive dialysis", he said, adding: "We were improvising with the adult machines, and the adult machines and consumables are not for children.”
The cost of dialysis has been a big issue in Ghana for the past few months following a hike in charges at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which was later reversed due to public outcry.
