The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has officially handed over a site for a major land reclamation project aimed at restoring degraded lands along the River Subile in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region.

The project, which will be undertaken by Ecorestore Ghana Limited, seeks to reclaim approximately 800 acres of land that have been degraded by mining activities and other environmental pressures.

Funded by Zijin Golden Ridge Limited in partnership with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the initiative forms part of broader efforts to rehabilitate degraded ecosystems and promote sustainable land use.

Speaking during the site handover ceremony, the Minister underscored the importance of restoring environmentally damaged lands to support ecological sustainability and improve livelihoods in affected communities.

According to him, the selected tree species for the reclamation exercise have been carefully chosen to improve soil fertility, restore ecological balance, and facilitate the long-term productive use of the land.

The project is expected to contribute significantly to environmental restoration efforts in the Ellembelle District, while supporting government’s wider agenda to combat land degradation and promote responsible natural resource management.

Mr. Buah reaffirmed government’s commitment to addressing the environmental consequences of years of irresponsible mining activities, particularly within forest reserves, water bodies, and farming communities.

He noted that land reclamation and ecosystem restoration remain critical components of national efforts to reverse environmental damage caused by illegal and unsustainable mining practices.
