E/R: Suhum fire rescuers retrieve body of infant from toilet pit; mother arrested
The Suhum Municipal Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call around 6:30 a.m. on Monday near the Gateway Preparatory School at Ali, a suburb of Suhum.
An 11-member rescue team, led by Assistant Station Officer (ASTNO) Danso Henry, arrived at the scene at approximately 6:44 a.m. and commenced a delicate rescue operation.
Sadly, at about 7:00 a.m., the team retrieved the lifeless body of a one-week-old baby boy from a toilet pit.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the tragic act was allegedly committed by the baby’s mother, who initially fled the scene.
The infant’s body has since been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Law enforcement authorities have confirmed the arrest of the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Priscilla Owusua, at Suhum Oforikrom Ayekotse.
She is currently assisting the police with their investigations.
The Ghana National Fire Service has commended the Suhum Fire Rescue team for their professionalism, prompt response, and dedication in managing this heartbreaking incident.
