Police arrest driver at Asanso with 713 slabs of suspected narcotic drugs
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect for the unlawful possession of 713 slabs of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following a targeted operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on January 26, 2026, after police officers on snap check duty intercepted a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint.
Akanyani was the driver of the vehicle at the time of the interception.
A search conducted on the bus led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks concealed inside the vehicle.
Upon opening the sacks, officers found dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, compressed into a total of 713 slabs.
Police further disclosed that during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GHS150,000, an offer which was firmly rejected.
The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while police intensify efforts to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other individuals connected to the offence.
