Police intercept arms and ammunition in Accra after suspect flees surveillance
The Ghana Police Service has intercepted a cache of arms and ammunition in Accra following a security operation triggered by intelligence on suspected illegal arms trafficking.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m., after intelligence reports indicated that an unidentified individual was transporting arms and ammunition on a blue Royal motorcycle to Kpandai.
A surveillance team was immediately deployed and tracked the suspect from the Obestebi Lamptey Interchange towards the Agbogbloshie Bus Terminal.
Police said the rider became aware he was being followed and abandoned several parcels wrapped in black nylon bags before fleeing the scene.
A search of the abandoned items revealed one A-Tac semi-automatic shotgun, two Jojef semi-automatic shotguns, and two boxes of cartridges containing a total of 500 BB cartridges.
Despite a coordinated pursuit and search operation in the area, the suspect managed to evade arrest.
Police say investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the motorcycle rider and to establish the source and intended destination of the weapons.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to tackling illegal arms circulation and urged the public to provide any information that could assist in the arrest of the suspect.
