W/R : 6 arrested after fatal shooting at illegal mining site in Nzema East
Police in the Western Region have detained six people over the fatal shooting of a man at an illegal mining site at Gwira Ampansie in the Nzema East District.
The victim, identified as 45-year-old Angu Mensah, also known as Abusuapanyi, was allegedly shot during a confrontation at the site.
The Western Regional Police Command said three Ghanaians and three Chinese nationals are currently assisting with investigations into the incident.
Those arrested are Hamza Abubakar, 36, Hamidu Seidu, 42, Francis Biewose, 26, Bai Yaozheng, 36, Liu Gang, 43, and Wen Xien Wen, 45.
According to police, officers at Axim received a distress report on Sunday, May 24, concerning a shooting at the mining location. A team, together with personnel from the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate, was dispatched to the area.
Initial investigations indicate that a dispute erupted between the deceased and some individuals at the site before the shooting occurred.
Police identified the alleged shooter as Alfred Sadick, popularly known as “Strong Man,” who is said to have shot the victim in the chest before fleeing.
The suspect is currently at large, with police saying efforts are ongoing to track and arrest him.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital mortuary pending autopsy.
The Police Command has appealed to the public to volunteer any information that could assist in the arrest of the suspect.
