Interim Council inaugurated for University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has inaugurated the Interim Council of the newly established University of Engineering and Agricultural Sciences at Bonsu, marking a major step in Ghana’s efforts to expand access to higher education and promote specialised training in engineering and agriculture.
The university, located at Bonsu in the Eastern Region, was established at a cost of $19 million and is expected to admit its first batch of 800 students in October 2026.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Education Minister urged members of the Interim Council to work diligently to ensure the smooth and timely takeoff of the institution, noting that President John Dramani Mahama expects the university to become operational within schedule.
According to the Minister, the institution will offer programmes in Engineering and Agricultural Sciences, aimed at producing skilled professionals to support Ghana’s industrialisation and agricultural transformation agenda.
Hon. Iddrisu also disclosed that government has approved plans for key infrastructure development projects to support the university’s operations, including accommodation facilities for both staff and students, as well as improved internet connectivity on campus.
He further announced that approval has been granted for the recruitment of 150 faculty and staff members to support academic and administrative work at the university.
The establishment of the university forms part of government’s broader strategy to increase access to tertiary education, promote research and innovation, and drive socio-economic development in the Eastern Region and beyond.
